New York Hockey Dating

Three NHL teams, two states, a dozen train lines and some of the fiercest rivalries in the sport. Dating as a hockey fan here takes a plan.

One metro, three fan bases

No other American metro packs in hockey like New York. The Rangers play in Manhattan, the Islanders on Long Island and the Devils across the river in New Jersey. That means the question "who do you root for?" carries real weight on a first date. It can tell you which borough someone grew up in, which train they ride and which side of a playoff series their family has been on for decades.

The good news for daters: there is almost always a game somewhere in the metro. The challenge: getting to it takes some thought, and the rivalry talk can get personal.

Madison Square Garden and the Rangers

The Rangers, one of the Original Six, have played in New York since 1926. Their home is Madison Square Garden, sitting on top of Penn Station between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. That location is a gift for dating. Subway lines, the Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit and Amtrak all stop underneath, so two people coming from Queens and Hoboken can meet at the same entrance without a car.

The neighborhood around the Garden is busy and noisy before games, so pick a meeting point a block or two away. Koreatown along 32nd Street is a short walk east and has plenty of spots for a pregame meal or a postgame drink. The Rangers' four Stanley Cup titles include 1994, a run that still gets mentioned by fans of a certain age with misty eyes.

UBS Arena and the Islanders

The Islanders won four straight Cups from 1980 to 1983, and their fans have never let anyone forget it. Since 2021 they have played at UBS Arena in Elmont, beside Belmont Park on the Queens-Nassau line. The Long Island Rail Road serves the Elmont-UBS Arena station on game days, which makes the trip workable from Manhattan, Brooklyn and much of Long Island. Many fans still drive in from Suffolk County.

Islanders crowds are known for loud, loyal energy and a chip on the shoulder, especially when the Rangers visit. If your date is an Islanders fan, ask about the dynasty years or the old Nassau Coliseum. You will learn a lot about them.

Prudential Center and the Devils

The Devils moved to New Jersey in 1982 and have since won three Cups, in 1995, 2000 and 2003. They play at Prudential Center in downtown Newark, a short walk from Newark Penn Station, which is served by PATH, NJ Transit and Amtrak. Fans from Manhattan can ride PATH from the World Trade Center, and fans from the Jersey suburbs often take NJ Transit or drive.

Downtown Newark around "the Rock," as fans call the arena, has a growing list of restaurants, and the Ironbound neighborhood, known for Portuguese and Brazilian food, is nearby for dinner before a game.

The rivalries, and how to survive them

Rangers and Islanders is a city-versus-suburb battle with a long playoff history. Rangers and Devils is a cross-river feud sharpened by the 1994 and 2012 conference finals. Islanders and Devils fans tend to be more relaxed with each other but still enjoy a jab. If you are dating across these lines, agree on a few rules: who chooses the bar for rivalry games, how long the gloating lasts and whether you sit together at an away game. Mixed Rangers and Islanders households will find more in our rival-fan guide.

Skating in the city

New York's seasonal rinks make easy first dates.

Rinks in the city can be crowded on weekends and holidays, so aim for off-peak hours if you want to talk.

College and women's hockey

College hockey is a good alternative to an NHL night. Teams in the region play affordable games, and the crowds are full of students and alumni. The PWHL also has a New York team, the Sirens, which gives fans a chance to watch the top women's players in the world. Check schedules for their home venue, which has varied by season.

Getting home safely

New York nights end late. A game at the Garden that starts at 7 p.m. finishes around 9:30, but a postgame drink can take you past midnight, when some trains run less often. Check the LIRR, NJ Transit or PATH schedule before you settle in, and keep a backup plan. On weekends, track work can change routes. Book your own ride home and keep your phone charged. Late trains and crowded platforms are covered in our safety guide.
